Sao Paulo: Ciudad de contrastes / City of contrasts

Sao Paulo es una ciudad de contrastes, originalmente se construyó con casas bajas de solo una o dos alturas y con la expansión se han ido construyendo miles de edificios altos en medio de las casas, aunque todavía quedan muchísimas en casi todas las calles. Aqui teneis por ejemplo un condominio de dos torres y justo al lado podemos encontrar este pequeño conjunto de casas cuyos dueños seguro esperan...una buena oferta!

Sao Paulo is a city of contrasts, originally was built with low houses of only one or two levels and with the expansion have been built thousands of high buildings in the middle of the houses, although there are still many of them in almost every street. Here you have for example a two-tower condo and right beside can be found this small group of houses whose owners expect ... a good deal!

Otra de las cosas realmente peculiares aquí son las pintadas de los "pixadores", banda organizadas de jóvenes que se dedican a subir a los edificios y dejar huella de sus inscripciones, utilizando un lenguaje secreto que en teoría solo ellos conocen. Lo cierto es que da pena ver tantos edificios pintados así, algunos en su totalidad. Aunque la actividad ahora está perseguida por la Ley normalmente estas bandas efectúan "acciones" de una forma coordinada evitando la actuación de la Policía. Aqui al lado por ejemplo tenéis un edificio entero "pixado" en pleno centro de la ciudad de Sao Paulo, o la típica pared con la enigmática escritura de extraños signos.

Another really unique thing here are the graffiti of "pixadores" organized gangs of young people who climb up to the buildings and leave traces of their inscriptions, using a secret language that only they know in theory. The truth is that is ashaming to see so many buildings painted, some in full. Although the activity is now pursued by the law usually these bands perform "actions" in a coordinated manner avoiding action by the police. Here for example you have an entire building "pixado" in the heart of the city of Sao Paulo or the typical wall with the writing of strange enigmatic signs.

Y siguiendo con los contrastes, mejor nos pasamos al lado bonito de la moneda y nos llegamos el barrio de Ipiranga para visitar los Jardines de la Independencia y el precioso palacio neoclásico que alberga el Museo Paulista, o Museo de Ipiranga, que explica de una manera super interesante la historia de Brasil desde su independencia cuando el Príncipe Regente portugués Pedro I gritó la famosa frase "independencia o Muerte", momento reflejado magistralmente por un pintor local en el enorme cuadro que puede verse en el salón principal del museo. Tanto el propio majestuoso edificio, como los cuadros, objetos y documentos históricos que contiene son un testimonio privilegiado de este país que por supuesto vale la pena conocer.

Continuing with the contrasts, the better is moving to the pretty side of the coin and we get the Ipiranga neighborhood to visit the Gardens of Independence and the beautiful neoclassical palace that houses the Museu Paulista, or Ipiranga Museum, which explains in a super interesting way the Brazilian history since independence when the Portuguese Prince Regent Pedro I shouted the famous phrase "independence or death", reflected brilliantly in the huge paintingthat can be seen in the main hall of the museum. Both the majestic building itself, such as pictures, objects and historical documents it contains are an extraordinary witness of this country which of course is worth knowing.

Y para finalizar recordaros que estamos en plenas vacaciones de carnaval. Uno puede quedarse en casa, mezclarse en fiestas callejeras, ir a escuchar samba a un loca, apuntarse a alguna de las muchas fiestas que organizan los hoteles, clubs y discotecas, o simplemente, sino te gusta la samba...irte a escuchar jazz o blues ya que también hay excelentes sitios para disfrutarlo. And finally tell you that we are in full carnival holiday... one can stay home, mixed in street parties, go listen to a local samba, sign up for any of the many parties organized by the hotels, clubs and discos, or simply, if you do not like the samba ... you go to hear jazz or blues as there are also great places to enjoy it. Playas de Sao Sebastiao

Relativamente cerca de Sao Paulo hacia el norte del estado se encuentra San Sebastiao a cuyo alrededor se desparraman 33 playas de diferentes características pero todas ellas muy bonitas. Conocerlas todas es una misión muy agradable...pero hay que tomárselo con calma. Con Montse, mi mujer, fuimos a  Juquehy, a 156 km de SP, y desde alli exploramos...

 Relatively close to Sao Paulo to the north of the state lies San Sebastiao around which 33 beaches scattered very different but all very nice. Knowing them is a mission quite amazing ... but you have to take it easy. Montse, my wife went to Juquehy, 156 km from SP, and from there explore ...

Juquehy es uno de los mejores lugares para ir ya que es una playa tranquila, con casitas bajas y ninguna aglomeración, pero también cuenta con tiendas, restaurantes y algunas pousadas fantásticas. Nosotros nos instalamos en Chez Louise et Louis, pero hay otras que estan muy bien como la Pousada dos Alcatrazes. Desde alli a pocos kilometros ir a la Praia Preta, muy bonita, pero lo mejor es que hay barcas de pescadores que te llevan a las islas desiertas que hay entrente As Ilhas y te recogen a la hora que les digas. Es una maravilla!

Juquehy is one of the best places to go because it is a quiet beach, with low houses and no agglomeration, but also has shops, restaurants and some wonderful pousadas. We settled on Chez Louise et Louis, but others are fine as the Pousada dos Alcatrazes. From there, a few kilometers to go to Praia Preta, very nice, but the best is that there are fishing boats that take you to the deserted islands in fornt As Ilhas and pick you up when you tell them. It is a wonder!



Praia de Engenho


Si lo que deseas es más movimiento y marcha entonces mejor llegarse hasta Camboury o Maresias, donde hay mucha gente joven, bares y discotecas, aunque son playas más largas y con más afluencia de público. Nosotros en cambio preferimos visitar otras playas más tranquilas como las de Engenho y Jureia. Es impresionante ver como la vegetación (mata atlántica) llega hasta la arena de la playa!

 If you just want more movement and fun then reach up to Camboury or Maresias, where thera are many young people, bars and nightclubs, although beaches are longer and more crowded. We instead prefered to visit other quieter beaches such as Engenho and Jureia. It is impressive to see how the vegetation (Atlantic Forest) goes to the beach sand!

Más, por supuesto lo mejor es haber pasado un fin de semana junto a Montse tras más de un mes sin vernos, es un entorno agradable y precioso. Poder pasear de noche por la playa desierta, tomar unas caipirinhas junto al mar, o simplemente tener tiempo para estar juntos sin hablar a traves del Facetime o el Skype, no tiene precio.

But, of course the best is having spent a weekend with Montse after more than a month without seeing each other, in a pleasant and beautiful context. Able to walk at night along the deserted beach, take a few caipirinhas by the sea, or just have time to be together without talking through the Facetime or Skype, is priceless. She looks happy, isn't she? Please come back soon!

Verano en Buenos Aires

Desde Los Angeles, pasando por Dallas, volé hasta Buenos Aires donde llegué un soleado domingo: allí están en pleno verano, hace calor y buen tiempo! Para un español aunque sea catalán como yo llegar a esta ciudad es como llegar a un lugar familiar, por mucho que muchas costumbres sean diferentes...hasta existe el barrio de Montserrat! La torre de la foto se llamaba de "los ingleses" pero después de la guerra de Las Malvinas le llamaron de otra forma y le colocaron el memorial por los caídos argentinos en dicha guerra justo enfrente...

From Los Angeles going through Dallas I took a flight to Buenos Aires where I arrived in a sunny Sunday: there is summer, it is warm and they have good weather. For an Spanish altough Catalan like me arriving to this city is like geting into a familiar place, despite many things are diferent....even there is a neighbourhood called Montserrat. The tower of the picture used to be calle of the English but its name was changed after the Malvinas war and a memorial for the fallen in that war has been located just in front of it.

Podéis llegar a pensar que fui allí de turismo pero lo cierto es que junto a mi equipo de Claims no paramos de trabajar durante los cinco días laborables de la semana. Eso sí el sábado Natalia nos invitó a pasar el día en su casa de campo y disfrutar del tradicional asado argentino, con toda clase de cortes de carne hechas a la brasa de la leña por un excelente parrillero! Un poco de pileta, un poco de ping pong, mucha carne, algo de mate y un estupendo día a pocos kilómetros de la capital.

You should think that I went there as a tourist but the truth is tha together with my Claims team there we worked hard the five working days. All right, on Saturday Natalia invite us to her countryside house and enjoy the traditional Argentinian "asado", with all its different cuts grilled with wood, with a superb "parrillero"! A little bit of swiming pool, a little bit of ping pong, a lot of meat, some "mate" and a fantastic day at few miles form the city.

 Y por fin el domingo fui a conocer Buenos Aires con el Bus Turistic, visitando todos los barrios principales. Es interesante en la zona del centro ver la Plaza de Mayo, donde siguen habiendo continuas manifestaciones ciudadanas de todo tipo, o el barrio de la Boca, donde además de estar el famoso estadio de La Bombonera del Boca Juniors, se encuentra la zona de la calle Caminito con todo tipo de artistas, restaurantes y tiendas y pequeñas casa pintadas de vistoso colores...si bien me quede sin batería en la cámara de fotos!

And finally on Sunday I went to visit Buenos Aires with the Tourist Bus, visiting all the main districts. It is interesting in the downtown area to see the Plaza de Mayo, where citizens are having continuous demonstrations of any kind, or the neighborhood of La Boca, where in addition to famous La Bombonera stadium of Boca Juniors, is the area Caminito street with all kinds of artists, restaurants and shops and small houses painted in bright colors ... unfortunately just there the battery of my camera run out!

Sin desmerecer los barrios de Montserrat, San Telmo, Retiro, Palermo o Belgrano, mi barrio favorito es Recoleta con sus mansiones señoriales, sus calles arboladas, su cementerio, su iglesia de El Pilar, sus artistas ambulantes y sus restaurantes y terrazas. Y entre ellas la mejor para mi gusto "La Biela", por su terraza, su decoración, su servicio y su localización. A continuación alguna escenas de Recoleta que creo mercen ser compartidas con vosotros...con bailarines de tango incluidos!

Without detracting from the Montserrat, San Telmo, Retiro, Palermo and Belgrano neighbourhoods, Recoleta is my favorite one with its stately mansions, tree-lined streets, its cemetery, the church of El Pilar, its street artists and performers, restaurants and terraces.

And among them the best in my opinion "La Biela" for its terrace, its decor, service and location. Here you have some Recoleta scenes that I feel they deserve be shared with you...tango dancers included!
